Women Outgive Men in Charitable Donations

New research from the Women’s Philanthropy Institute (WPI) at the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University has determined that women are more likely to give to charity than men, and donate more money on average than their male colleagues. The findings held even when researchers controlled for education, income and myriad factors that influence individual charitable giving. The report, Women Give 2010, is available here.
The impact of these findings on future giving is unclear – women may consider this information as validation that they have been over-giving and some may scale back contributions, on the other hand, men may increase giving amounts due to the coverage of these discrepancies.
